Simple and Fun Money Saving Activities

Here are 10 fun and easy activities that you can incorporate into your everyday lives to save money. You can pick one, two, or all ten to complete. The choice is yours! Remember to have fun and hopefully make this a long-term part of your financial journey!

  1. Compare what you actually spent on groceries the last time you went shopping to what you had budgeted to spend. Notice the difference and make changes if you overspent.
  2. Call your insurance company (home, auto, renters, etc.) and find out if there are any steps you could take to lower your monthly premium.
  3. Review your cellphone plan and see where you can reduce costs, or shop around for better deals.
  4. Track your expenses manually (paper/pen or spreadsheet) or with an app. Use these amounts as a guide to determine your monthly spending amount.
  5. Identify and reduce one discretionary expense (example: cable, dining out, entertainment, etc.).
  6. Stop the subscriptions you don’t use and combine other subscriptions with family/friends if possible (example: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.).
  7. Plan a fun, free activity with family or friends (example: free summer music festivals, summer carnivals, free museums, etc.)
  8. Put your credit cards in a drawer and only carry and use cash. See how long you can go.
  9. When you feel the sudden impulse to buy something, wait 24 – 48 hours, then reassess whether you really need it. Use the wish list feature when you shop online.
  10. Set up direct deposit(s) from your paycheck or automatic transfer from your checking account to an Emergency Savings Account and Dreams Account (Home, Car, Vacation, Education etc.).

Please feel free to share your experience or outcome in the section below. I would love to hear how you enjoyed these activities! If you have any questions, comments, or feedback, please let me know below.
